Friday the 13th. For 2011, this date has come and gone (May). A relief to many, as this day of the week has become synonymous with bad luck, thanks to a little-known gold market crash known as Black Friday in 1869. When the Friday falls on the 13th day of the month, then you’ve got perhaps the worst possible day of the year – if you’re superstitious, anyway. There’s been a great deal of theorizing around the bad fortune associated with the number 13, from numerology to old-fashioned superstition.
According to Wikipedia, in numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness: twelve months of the year, twelve hours of the clock, twelve gods of Olympus, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness. There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.
Where’s the Thirteenth Floor? As a direct result of this superstition, there has been an incredible amount of research into people’s phobias around the number thirteen – so much so, it has a name: triskaidekaphobia. Over the years, many owners or building contractors have simply omitted the thirteenth floor altogether, in an effort to calm the nerves of the superstitious. Estimates claim that nearly 85% of highrise elevators (both commercial and residential) do NOT include a button for the thirteenth floor. Instead, you will sometimes find the letter M (the letter M being the thirteenth letter in the alphabet), or “12B”, or find that the entire floor has been transformed into a utility floor, or banquet floor, and is referred to by name rather than by number.
